MP4 vs WebM vs MOV: Choosing a Video Format

Compare common video containers for browser playback, editing and compatibility before converting.

A container is not the same as a codec

MP4, WebM and MOV are container formats. The actual audio and video streams inside can use different codecs, so changing the container may also require transcoding when the source streams are not compatible with the target.

MP4 is broadly compatible

MP4 is commonly accepted by browsers, phones, messaging apps and editing software. H.264 video with AAC audio is a common compatibility combination, though exact support still depends on the device and software.

WebM is designed for web media

WebM is common for browser-focused workflows and often uses VP8, VP9 or AV1-family video with compatible audio codecs. It can be efficient for web delivery but is not the preferred format in every editing application.

MOV is common in editing workflows

MOV is widely associated with Apple and professional editing workflows. Converting MOV to MP4 can improve general playback compatibility, but transcoding may take significant CPU time and can change quality.
