JSON, CSV and XML: Choosing the Right Data Format
Understand the structural differences before converting data files.
CSV is tabular
CSV works best when data naturally fits rows and columns. Nested objects and arrays do not map cleanly without flattening or serializing values.
JSON represents nested structures
JSON can represent arrays, objects, strings, numbers, booleans and null values. It is a natural fit for APIs and application data but less convenient for direct spreadsheet editing.
XML is a tree
XML uses nested elements and attributes and can represent complex document structures. Converting XML to JSON is possible, but there is no universal one-to-one mapping for every schema.
Validate before converting
A converter first needs valid input syntax. Formatting and validation tools are useful before transformation because malformed source data can otherwise produce confusing results.
