How to Choose an Image Format for Web, Forms and Upload Portals
Choose between JPG, PNG and WebP based on transparency, compatibility, detail and file-size limits.
Start with the destination
The best format depends on where the image is going. A website may benefit from WebP, a document portal may explicitly request JPG, and a logo with transparency may require PNG. Check the receiving system before converting.
Use JPG for photographs when compatibility matters
JPEG is widely supported and usually efficient for photographs. It does not support transparency, and repeated lossy re-encoding can introduce visible artifacts, so keep an original copy.
Use PNG when transparency or crisp graphics matter
PNG preserves sharp edges and transparency well, which suits logos, screenshots and interface graphics. Photographic PNG files can be much larger than JPEG or WebP at similar visual quality.
Use WebP when modern web delivery is the goal
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression and can preserve transparency. It is a strong choice for modern web delivery, but a specific upload portal may still require JPG or PNG.
